The City of Wasco (Pop. 25,781) is a growing, vibrant community of 9.4 square
miles, strategically located 26 miles north of Bakersfield in the geographic center of
Kern County in California’s Central Valley. The City is now approximately 50% built
out with a residential population anticipated to reach 50,000. Wasco is a businessfriendly,
balanced community with a strong agricultural heritage and a “small town”
suburban/rural feel, offering planners a full range of challenges associated with a
mixed use community with residential, commercial and industrial opportunities.
The Community Development Director is responsible for the City’s advanced and
current planning functions in addition to oversight of the Building Inspection and
Code Compliance Divisions. Reporting directly to the City Manager, the Director will
supervise a small, competent staff with an opportunity to build his/her own highperforming
team. While no specific planning discipline is being sought, the new
Director should be an experienced planning professional with ten years of experience
with at least four years at a high supervisory or executive level. Wasco’s ideal
candidate could be either an accomplished planning professional seeking a career
opportunity to lead a Community Development Department or a seasoned community
development executive looking to complete his/her career in an economically and
politically stable small city.
Salary range is set at $7,250-9,425/Month with an attractive executive benefit
