The City of Tracy (Pop. 82,000) is a friendly, family-oriented community strategically located within the center of a triangle formed by the convergence of Interstates 580, 205 and 5 in the heart of the Central Valley.

Tracy’s close proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area and reputation as a pro-business, richly diverse community with excellent schools, low crime and affordable housing has attracted many Bay Area workers seeking home ownership and a high quality of life. Tracy is seeking an accomplished leader and manager to serve as its new Fire Chief.

The new Chief will oversee the work of a high-performing, customer service-oriented Fire Department and administer a budget of approximately $14.6 million, leading a staff of 78 in the functional areas of Operations, Fire Prevention and Training. The Fire Department responded to approximately 7,000 calls from the City’s seven stations in 2009. The City’s fire service area covers approximately 23 square miles within the city limits and, as a part of the South County Fire Authority, over 200 square miles in the southern part of San Joaquin County. The ideal candidate will be a proven fire services manager who has progressed steadily through the ranks, demonstrating the ability to make tough decisions with an orientation to achieving results. 

The successful candidate will value a consultative approach to labor/management relations and have a track record of fostering constructive labor/management negotiations. The equivalent of an AA Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Fire Science, Fire Business, Public Administration or a closely related field is required. A Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree is highly sesirable. Candidates may qualify with a combination of education, training and experience with at least three years of full time employment in a fire department management or administrative capacity equivalent to the Battalion Chief rank or higher. Salary $145,561 - $176,899, DOQ, includes 3%@55 PERS retirement (single highest year). Tracy also provides a City-paid deferred compensation program as a part of a highly competitive benefit package.
