CITY OF SNELLVILLE, GEORGIA

 

This is an exciting opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community that is part of a bustling metropolitan area located in America’s Sunbelt.   The City of Snellville is seeking a highly qualified individual to become its next City Manager. The selected individual will be appointed by the Mayor and Council, and will manage the daily operations of the City government.  The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of modern local government management principles and practices.   Minimum requirements for the position are a Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration or a related field from an accredited college or university. A Master’s degree would be a definite plus.  Prior experience as a City or County Manager is also required.  Candidates need to show evidence of continued professional development such as an ICMA professional accreditation. Residence within the City of Snellville by the new City Manager is desired but may not be required. Possession of significant background in government budgeting and/or an accounting background is preferred.  Any additional management experience in the private sector will also be a plus. 

Snellville is seeking not only a team player but a team builder. A creative and proactive approach is required to take Snellville into the future.   Snellville’s City Manager must be willing to get involved in the community and be citizen-oriented.   The position requires an individual, with a strong work ethic, who can be responsive and accessible to the City Council.  As a community leader the new City Manager must be a comfortable and effective public speaker with the ability to attract, develop and retain outstanding employees.

The City Manager acts as Chief Administrative Officer of the City and manages the daily operations of Snellville’s government.   The position reports directly to the Mayor and Council.  The City Manager’s duties and responsibilities may be further defined or provided by the position description for City Manager approved by the City Council.  The City Manager serves at the pleasure of the Mayor and Council.

The City of Snellville, Georgia, is located in the southern portion of Gwinnett County and is part of the metropolitan Atlanta area.  Snellville was incorporated on August 20, 1923, and bears the name of one of its founders, Thomas Snell who, along with James Sawyer, came to the United States from England in 1874.  

The City of Snellville population is currently 18,000. The City’s economic base is primarily residential and commercial with a predominance of high quality life amenities. It is a family-oriented community offering the features of a small town with close proximity to a large urban area. The Gwinnett County school system which provides education services for Snellville is the largest and best in Georgia. The City’s demographics are diverse and varied. Our community is proud of the hometown atmosphere and hosts an annual “Snellville Days Festival” the first weekend of every May. Snellville Days, which is in its 35th year, boasts an old-fashioned parade down Main Street and a weekend craft fair.  The festival was begun to help fund improvements on T. W. Briscoe Park a 100 acre park that is one of the city’s attractions for families.

The City of Snellville operates under a council/manager form of government and provides the following services: police, highways and streets, sanitation, parks and recreation, planning and zoning, and general and administrative services. The City is currently developing a Storm Water Utility. Gwinnett County provides water, sewer and fire protection services. The governing body of the City of Snellville consists of a directly-elected Mayor and five Councilmembers.  The current General Fund annual operating budget for the City is $11.1 million with an overall city budget of $18 million.  The City has 100.75 FTE employees. Currently, the City of Snellville consists of 10.4 square miles.

The starting salary for the City Manager position for the City of Snellville will be market competitive and dependent on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. The salary for the City Manager of Snellville will be up to $110,000 per annum.
