SARASOTA COUNTY, FLORIDA
Sarasota County anchors the middle of Florida’s western coast, approximately 60 miles south of Tampa Bay. It consists of the cities of Sarasota, Venice, and North Port, and the Town of Longboat Key. The county is home to approximately 381,000 permanent residents; more than 450,000 during the winter months. The community encompasses over 563 square miles, and is surrounded by 37 miles of open shoreline along the Gulf of Mexico.
Sarasota County was established in 1921 and adopted a Home Rule Charter in 1971. The Charter establishes a Commission-County Administrator form of government. The County Commission appoints only two employees – the County Administrator and the County Attorney. The County Administrator is the chief administrative officer for the county and serves at the pleasure of the County Commission. All employees under the County Commission, with the exception of the Office of the County Attorney, report through an administrative structure to the County Administrator.
Sarasota County is a full-service county typical of charter counties in Florida. Sarasota County Government, excluding constitutional officers, employs 2,071 full-time employees and operates with a budget of $867,145,196. The County Administrator shall carry out and exercise such powers and duties required by the County Charter and prescribed by the Board of County Commissioners.
The candidate shall have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional management experience. A Master’s degree and 2 years as an appointed city manager or county administrator is acceptable. The candidate will demonstrate a history of fiscally conservative stewardship of public funds by ensuring that the first priority is to focus on high-quality services, maintenance of infrastructure and the safety of Sarasota County citizens.
A starting salary and benefits are competitive and negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.
