San Jose, California (Pop. 925,000) is the third largest city in California and the eleventh largest in the nation. The Department of Public Works takes a cutting edge approach in the management and delivery of assigned projects and has become a leader in public sector building and project delivery. It has a professional staff of 477 and an operating budget of $45 million. The City’s CIP includes a current year budget of $1.35 billion and a projected five year expenditure of an additional $4.5 billion. The Department is seeking a Deputy Public Works Director for City Facilities to oversee delivery of a wide variety of new and ongoing municipal capital programs and projects recently approved by the citizens of San Jose. This newly created position serves as a key member of the Director’s Management Team. Technical expertise in public works engineering/operations is not a primary requirement of the position; the new Deputy Director will be expected to apply their strong leadership and management skills in the oversight of staff and capital improvement activities in two designated “City Service Areas”: Recreational and Cultural Services and Public Safety; two Divisions: Architectural Engineering and Parks and Recreational Facilities: and the delivery of two major programs: the New Civic Center and the Safety Bond. To be successful in this position, the Deputy Director will need have a collaborative management style and take a partnership approach to managing projects and staff as they interact with other city departments and stakeholders within and outside the City organization. The work environment is dynamic and exhilarating, consistent with a large city that has made a significant investment in its infrastructure and is fast-paced, performance based and focused on outcomes. The position requires at least five years of experience successfully managing capital projects in an agency of similar size and diversity. A four-year degree in a related field is required and a Master’s Degree is preferred. Applicants should clearly delineate specific strengths and accomplishments in the administrative areas of capital project management. Salary range is from $93,000 - $141,000 and the appointment may be made anywhere within the range, depending upon qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package includes fully paid City Retirement based on a 2.5% @ 55 formula (full reciprocity with PERS), a 457 (B) Deferred Compensation Plan, tax deferred medical and dependent savings plans and relocation assistance.
