CITY OF PITTSBURG, KANSAS
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced management professional to live and work in a tight knit university community of 20,000 situated in southeast Kansas. The City of Pittsburg is the largest community in southeast Kansas and offers a friendly, relaxed environment coupled with a variety of cultural, art, educational, and sports attractions.
The Mayor and City Commission desire to continue the evolution of the City as a 21st century organization utilizing innovative approaches to providing cost-effective services to its residents and businesses. The City has had three managers in the last twenty years with the current manager retiring after a 45-year career with the City of Pittsburg.
About the Candidate
Qualified candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in public administration, business, or a related field from an accredited institution. A Master’s Degree or related professional degree is preferred. A minimum of five to eight years of experience in city management or as an assistant city manager in a larger community is desired. Experience working in a university community is a plus.
The successful candidate will be a proven leader capable of serving as a highly visible representative of the city. The next city manager will reside in Pittsburg and be willing to become involved in many facets of life in the community.

· Ability to help develop and implement a strategic plan

· Demonstrated approach to holding staff accountable for performance

· Successful use of innovative technology to improve services and reduce operating costs
· Knowledge of municipal water/wastewater/storm water systems
· Understanding of municipal airport operations

Future Issues to be Addressed
The next city manager will ideally have a successful track record with these high priority issues to be addressed in Pittsburg:
· Strategies to improve housing conditions in low income/rental neighborhoods (health, safety, and appearance issues)
· Rehabilitation of aging infrastructure (utility lines/streets)
· Participation in intergovernmental effort to extend 4-lanes of State Highway 69 to Pittsburg
· Creative approaches to increase police patrol officer staffing levels
· Utilizing innovative technology or techniques to reduce operating costs
· Attracting new business and industry to the community
Compensation
The starting salary for the position will range from $100,000 to $130,000 depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. A market competitive benefits package will be provided as well. Reasonable relocation expense reimbursement will also be provided. The selected candidate will be required to live in the City of Pittsburg.
