ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

CITY OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA

The City of Orlando is seeking the ideal candidate for the position of Economic Development Department Director. The successful candidate will have the responsibility of directing the operations of six (6) distinct business units: Code Enforcement, City Planning, Transportation Planning, Permitting Services, Downtown Development Board/Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and Office of Business Assistance. The successful candidate for Director of the City of Orlando Economic Development Department is required to possess a Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Economics, Real Estate Development, Business Administration, or Public Administration and eight (8) or more years of experience in planning and community development, real estate development, business/public administration or a related field. Three (3) years of such experience should have been in a senior management/supervisory capacity. A valid Florida driver's license is required with an AICP certification or professional engineering license or related certification desired, but is not required.

The City of Orlando Economic Development Department Director is responsible for providing the vision, leadership and strategic direction to the Economic Development Department and all community development programs and growth management initiatives within the City. The Economic Development Department Director serves at the pleasure of the Mayor and reports to him through the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the City.

The successful candidate for the Director of the Economic Development Department of the City of Orlando will be expected to reside within the City within a reasonable time following his/her employment.

Orlando – one of the world’s fastest-growing cities – is known as the center of a dynamic metropolitan area of more than two million people and is a hub for digital media and bio medicine.  Orlando has the 10th-busiest airport in the U. S. with flight connections all over the world. Nearly one in every five adult Orlando resident was born outside the continental U. S. The current population of the City is estimated at 267,000.

The City of Orlando operates under a Strong Mayor Form of Government. The executive branch of the City government is headed by a directly-elected Mayor as CEO. The legislative branch consists of six Commissioners (City Council) who are elected from districts. The Mayor is elected to a 4-year term and each Commissioner is elected to a 4- year term. The current Mayor, Buddy Dyer, has been in office for 7 years. There are no term limits. The Mayor appoints a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) who is responsible for day-to-day operations of the City.

The Economic Development Department Director is appointed by the Mayor and reports to the CAO. The FY 2009/2010 budget for the Economic Development Department is $34.5 million and there is 183 FTE staff in the Department.

The salary range is currently $108,888 to $142,916 per annum. The starting salary will be market competitive depending upon the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.  In addition, a competitive benefits package will be provided to the successful candidate.
