This is an outstanding opportunity to become County Administrator of a growing progressive County located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of upstate South Carolina. The Oconee County Council is seeking an experienced, dynamic individual to be its next County Administrator.
The successful candidate for the position of County Administrator of Oconee County is required to possess a Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration or a related field and experience in Public Administration or management experience is desired. A Master’s degree in Public Administration or a related field is preferred.
The County Council is also seeking a person that can develop an understanding of the roots of the County, is a good listener, someone that is willing to resolve issues, that is a visionary, and is an excellent communicator with the general public.
The County Administrator is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances passed by the County Council, for overseeing day-to-day operations of the County government and for appointing the County’s Department Directors.
Oconee County, formed in 1868, is located in the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains and is an area encompassing rivers, lakes, mountains and forests. As one of South Carolina’s most scenic and economically stimulating counties, Oconee County is situated in the northwestern corner of the state and is part of one of the nation’s fastest growing areas, the I-85 corridor.
Oconee County is known as the “Golden Corner” because of its climate, its spectacular beautiful lakes and the beauty of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. The County’s population estimate is 69,577 and the County seat is Walhalla, a short drive from Seneca, the largest municipality in the County. Clemson and Clemson University are also a short drive from Oconee County. Other cities in the County include Westminster. Oconee County adopted the Council-Administrator form of government in 2003. Under this type of government, each of five members of the County Council is elected from a district in which he/she resides.
Oconee County provides a full-range of services to citizens under the direction of the County Administrator. These include Airport, Economic Development, Public Works, General Government, Community Services, Emergency Services and Taxation. Oconee County provides no utility services directly, but does operate a stone quarry as an enterprise fund.
The County has a current annual all funds operating budget of $43 million. There are 480 County employees. The County is in good shape financially and County facilities are in good shape, with a few notable exceptions.
The starting salary for the new County Administrator will be market competitive, depending upon the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. In addition, a competitive benefits package will be provided to the successful candidate.
