This is an exciting opportunity to live and work in a growing city on the beautiful Grand Strand coastline of South Carolina. The City of North Myrtle Beach is seeking a highly qualified individual to become its Director of Public Safety. The selected individual will manage the activities and operations of the Public Safety Department, providing a coordinated approach to police and fire activity and protection to promote public safety and welfare. This person assists the City Manager in obtaining available resources for promotion of Public Safety Programs, and reviews, interprets, and ensures implementation of public safety laws, regulations, and policies. The Director of Public Safety also prepares the department budget.
The successful individual will possess, as a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in Public Safety or Law Enforcement – Master’s degree is preferred - or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Graduation from the FBI Academy, Southern Police Institute, or National Fire Academy is desirable. The candidate must posses or be able to obtain within a reasonable period of time a valid South Carolina driver’s license and must be eligible or have successfully completed the required course work at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
The Director of Public Safety for the City of North Myrtle Beach supervises, directs, and reviews the activities of subordinates including the Chief of Fire Suppression, the Deputy Chief for Police Services, the Public Safety Administrative Assistant, the Captain for Professional Standards, and the Office of Emergency Preparedness.
The City of North Myrtle Beach, with a permanent population of 13,182 and a seasonal population of more than 100,000, is approximately 19 square miles with nine miles of beautiful coastline, part of South Carolina’s Grand Strand. Considered one of the nation’s top vacation destinations, the Grand Strand, with an increasing number of attractions, live-music theaters, shopping centers, and golf courses attracts visitors to the area throughout the year.
The City provides a full-range of services to its citizens, including police and fire protection; construction and maintenance of streets, drainage, and other infrastructure; and recreational activities and cultural events. Water, sewer, and solid waste services are provided by the government through enterprise funds.
The FY 2010 total City budget is $57,354,127 and there are 361 FTE City employees.
The Department of Public Safety is responsible for providing emergency services within the City, which includes police, fire, rescue, and emergency medical response. The 159 personnel within the Department provide fire-rescue, administration, victim’s services, uniform patrol, community services, investigations, and professional standards, records, communications, and fire prevention.
The Director of Public Safety will receive a salary in the range of $87,425 to $139,882, depending upon experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will also receive an automobile allowance and a competitive fringe benefit program. Reasonable relocation expenses will also be provided.
