The City of Newport News was chartered in 1896, and has long been known as one of the world=s major shipbuilding centers. The City is approximately 25 miles long and seven miles wide, with a population of 185,000 citizens, with a minority population of 39%. As the gateway to the Hampton Roads area at the James River, Newport News is recognized for its military and advanced technology facilities. Median household income for the year 2000 was $36,600. The current City was formed as a result of a merger of the original City of Newport News and Warwick County. The City operates under the council-manager form of government. The City Council consists of a Mayor and six Council members. The City provides a full-range of municipal services including police and fire, sanitation, health and social services, public improvements, planning and zoning, general administrative services and education, and operates a regional water system administered by the Newport News Department of Public Utilities. The City Council is the policy making body for the City. The annual budget is $711 million and there are 3,404 city employees, as well as 4,412 school employees. The current City Manager is retiring after eighteen (18) years of successful management for the City. Newport News is seeking a proven, dedicated, innovative and experienced individual for its next City Manager, and is searching for an individual who has a background in city management in a fairly large city and who is a strong leader, manager and administrator. The successful individual will also possess as a minimum a degree from a four-year college or university with a major in Public Administration or a related field. A graduate degree is preferred. The ideal candidate should possess at least five years of progressively responsible experience in city administration/management or equivalent experience involving private/public entities. The ideal candidate for the City Manager position should possess thorough knowledge of municipal administration and management including financial and operations management, economic development, and general management. Starting salary is market competitive depending on qualifications and experience, plus an excellent fringe benefit package.
