This is an outstanding opportunity to provide leadership and management for the public works function in one of the Atlanta areas top communities. The City of Marietta - recognized as a 2005 Trendsetter by the Georgia Trend magazine, designated as a City of Excellence and a City of Ethics by the Georgia Municipal Association, and a 2006 national finalist as an All America City - is looking for an exceptional individual to join its strong team of professional managers. Marietta is a progressive, historic city of 64,000 located in a fast growing Atlanta suburban county, Cobb County, which has an estimated population of 625,000. Marietta offers big-city opportunities with small-town charm. Marietta is one of those rare communities where young people return and retirees remain. The City of Marietta operates under a Council/Manager form of government. The City is divided into seven wards, with a city council member elected from each. The Mayor is elected at large. The elected body sets policies and the City Manager and department heads, including the Public Works Director, direct day-to-day operations. The City provides all traditional municipal services with an FY2006 budget of $213,000,000 across all funds and over 750 total positions. The Board of Lights and Water (57.1%) and the General Fund (20.9%) account for most of the City budget. The mission of the Public Works Department is "to provide the services of engineering; building inspection; maintenance of City streets, drainage systems, and traffic signals; solid waste collections and recycling; and fleet maintenance in a manner that protects the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens and promotes awareness and satisfaction for the services received." The department serves an area of 22.63 square miles, employs just over 100 people, and has a total FY2006 General Fund budget of $7,041,747 ($6,706,747 operating and $335,000 capital). In addition, the Fleet Maintenance Fund’s annual budget is $2,245,348 and the Transportation Fund’s (TIP) is $4,929,000. Public Works has six main divisions: Administration and Engineering, Building Inspection, Streets, Traffic Services, Sanitation, and Fleet Maintenance. The Board of Lights and Water, not part of DPW, oversees electric and water services in the City. The DPW Director is a department head position reporting to the City Manager. A Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (e.g., BSCE), Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification, and a minimum of 10 years progressively responsible experience in a similar public works operation, including at least 5 years related successful managerial experience; Must have knowledge and skill operating a PC and MS WINDOWS programs including WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK and others as required. Must have skill and knowledge of various statistical and budgetary spreadsheets; drug screen and credit and criminal background check; valid Georgia driver’s license; satisfactory seven-year driving history to include no DUI’s in the last five years; successful completion of one-year working test (a/k/a probationary) period. Salary range $85,280 to $93,600 DOQ/E, plus an excellent benefits package including no social security. The City regularly has adjusted salaries for cost-of-living and market conditions.
