Macon is among the largest metropolitan areas in Georgia and it is the county seat of Bibb County.  Macon is nearly at the geographic center of Georgia.  It is approximately 76 miles southeast of Atlanta.  Macon’s current population is 87,000. 

The City of Macon is seeking a dedicated, responsive, and experienced individual for its next Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).  The ideal candidate for CAO of the City of Macon shall have comprehensive knowledge of modern local government management principles and practices, concepts, methods and procedures. The successful candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Public or Business Administration or a related field plus eight years of experience in public administration.  A Master's Degree in Public or Business Administration or a related field with six years experience in public administration is preferred.  An ICMA Credentialed Manager is preferred.

The Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Macon shall serve at the pleasure of the Mayor and shall manage and direct the daily operations of the City government in accordance with local ordinances, laws and policies prescribed by the City Council. The Chief Administrative Officer shall direct the administrative activities of the City; act as a focal point for strategic planning, programming, and budgeting; supervise all City employees; serve as a liaison among the City staff and governing body; assist the general public; and serve on any boards or committees created by the Mayor and City Council.

The City of Macon, along with the City of Augusta and the City of Columbus, make up Georgia’s three Fall Line Cities. The Fall Line is where the hilly lands of the Piedmont plateau meet the flat terrain of the coastal plain. Because of this, Macon has a varied landscape of rolling hills on the north side and flat plains on the south.

The City of Macon operates under a council-mayor form of government.  Policy-making and legislative authority are vested in a government consisting of a mayor and fifteen council members. The council and the mayor are resonsible for passing ordinances, adopting the budget, appointing committees and hiring both the government’s finance director and attorney. 

The City of Macon provides a full range of services including police and fire protection; the construction and maintenance of highways, streets, and other infrastructure; and recreational activities and cultural events.  The annual budget serves as the foundation for the City’s financial planning and control.  The FY 2009 proposed budget is $118.6M. The City of Macon has 1,393 FTE employees.

The starting salary for the Chief Administrative Officer position for the City of Macon will be market competitive, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. In addition, an excellent fringe benefit package will be provided to the successful candidate.  Reasonable relocation expenses will also be paid for the selected candidate.
