DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS

   LEA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO

Salary ($85,000 - $90,000 DOQ)

 

Under the direction of the County Manager, this new position is responsible for oversight of the county roads, public works, airport, maintenance, environmental services, and solid waste departments.  Has primary responsibility for road construction and maintenance of over 1350 miles of county roads, approximately 650 of which are chip sealed.

 

Lea County is located in southeastern New Mexico.   Lovington is the County seat.  The County was established in 1917 and named for Captain Joseph Calloway Lea. The County’s 4,393 square miles of wide-open spaces is one of the state’s leading producers of oil and gas.  Ranching, farming, dairy industry, and nuclear energy related activities are also primary contributors to the economy.

 

Is responsible for overall planning, administration, operations, budget, and inter-governmental relations as they pertain to the department.  Actively seeks appropriate grant opportunities and oversight of construction and maintenance projects.  Acts as liaison with other governmental entities, and ensures compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and laws.  Facilitates the Solid Waste Authority, Airports, Environmental, and Road Advisory Boards.  Excellent communication skills are desired.

 

The ideal candidate will have a civil engineering degree with at least 6 years direct supervisory experience in construction and maintenance of public roads, facilities management, solid waste management, knowledge of engineering plans and construction, ability to perform project estimates, direct experience in the operation of heavy equipment, and supervision of construction crews.  Project management, construction inspection, and civil engineering skills are a plus.  Candidates with over 10 years direct supervisory experience with the above skills may be considered as a substitute for the college degree.
