The City of Kansas City is seeking interested, qualified candidates for three positions. The positions are Deputy Director of Public Works, City Engineer and Manager of Facilities. Located in the Heart of America, Kansas City, Missouri, (pop. 442,000) is a world class community with a long tradition of performing arts, outstanding sports, superb restaurants and spectacular entertainment. Kansas City has a rich history of supporting the cultural arts. The Kansas City economy is multifaceted, with a healthy retail sales base. Continued economic growth is vital to the City’s financial condition. Granted a charter in 1850, Kansas City now operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The elected leadership of the City is comprised of a Mayor elected at large and 12 Council Members. Members are elected for four-year terms of office with a two-term limit. The City Manager is appointed upon recommendation by the Mayor and confirmation/approval of the appointment by a majority of the City Council. The City Manager is responsible for a large, varied, multiple-purpose municipal organization, representing a workforce of 6,727 FTE spread across 19 departments and a current annual budget of $975 million. The Deputy Director of Public Works (Principal Assistant to the Department Head) position works closely with the director performing complex and challenging work establishing, implementing, and managing effective systems and procedures for the Public Works Department in accordance with established policies promulgated by the City Manager and City Council. Work involves working with the director in the oversight of the department budget, human resource, and public relation functions, and maintains an environment that encourages full utilization of staff and resources, use of the latest technology, and excellent customer service. The City’s Public Works Department consists of more than 500 employees. It is responsible for and includes the following divisions: administration, street & traffic, facilities management, solid waste, parking services, program management and development. The City Engineer (Assistant Engineering Director) position works closely with the director and the deputy director and directly manages the Street & Traffic Division. The Street & Traffic Division is responsible for capital planning, coordination with design & construction, operation and maintenance of the city’s roadways and bridges. Work includes overseeing the capital planning for roadways and bridges, engineering support, transportation planning, traffic engineering and operations, city surveying, material lab, street resurfacing and restoration, curb and sidewalk replacement program, streetlights, street maintenance, and the division’s budget and personnel. The successful candidate should have experience in developing and overseeing municipal projects, programs and services that support roadways and bridges and have the ability to coordinate capital improvements with the region’s metropolitan planning organization and the Missouri Department of Transportation. The Manager of Facilities Management (Assistant to the Director – Business & Support) position works closely with the director and the deputy director and directly manages the Facilities Management Division. The City’s Facilities Management Division is responsible for the direction, administration, and technical support in managing the City’s municipal facilities which includes over 150 facilities/structures. Work includes overseeing the division’s budget, managing personnel, planning, renovation, maintenance, and operation for all facilities/structures. Candidates must have an in-depth knowledge of municipal facilities management programs and services. The successful candidate should have experience in developing and overseeing planning, maintenance and operational programs, development of service level agreements, technical knowledge associated with facilities management, and have the ability to coordinate with major capital improvements.
