Jackson County is seeking a highly qualified individual to become its Deputy Medical Examiner. The selected individual will posses an MD or DO and will be board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology and have two years of work experience as a Forensic Pathologist in a Medical Examiner’s Office. The successful candidate should have experience conducting autopsies, be a person who enjoys working independently, who can adapt to the polices and procedures of the Medical Examiner’s Office, be open to input from other professionals and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The successful individual for this position should have an interest in Mass Fatality Management, organ and tissue donation, research and teaching. There is ample room for upward mobility for the motivated professional in this position. The Deputy Medical Examiner is responsible for assisting the Medical Examiner in the overall administrative and operational effectiveness of the Office of Medical Examiner for Jackson County. The Deputy Medical Examiner investigates and supervises the investigations of sudden, unexpected and violent deaths occurring in the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s service area. He/She also assists in the coordination of a full-time staff of 19 employees. The Deputy Medical Examiner is appointed by and reports to the Medical Examiner. The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office covers Jackson, Clay, Cass and Platte Counties of Missouri (a population of just under 1,000,000). The Office is accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners. The Office is staffed by a Chief Medical Examiner, Deputy Medical Examiner, Associate Medical Examiner, Forensic Administrator, Chief Investigator, eight Investigators, two Autopsy Aides, and three Clerical Staff. In 2006, there were 2,173 deaths reported and 715 autopsies conducted by the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office is a 24/7 operation with an in-house toxicologist. The mission of the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office is to provide professional, accurate, dignified, timely death investigations and post mortem examinations to determine the cause and manner of death for Jackson, Clay, Cass and Platte Counties. In addition, it is to provide forensic education and training to the community agencies it serves. Kansas City, Missouri, is the principal city within Jackson County. Kansas City has a population of approximately 450,000 and boasts a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities. Kansas City is best known for its jazz, barbecue and beautiful fountains. It has world and nationally renowned points of interest such as the Hallmark Visitors Center, America’s World War I Museum-Liberty Memorial, the 18th and Vine Jazz District and the Country Club Plaza. Jackson County operates under a home rule Charter, adopted in 1970. This Constitutional Home Rule Charter provides for a separation of the legislative and executive functions through an elected executive, a legislature, an elected sheriff and prosecuting attorney. The heart of the Charter is a strong elected executive, accountable to all the voters, who has the power to appoint the administrative officers of his/her government, the power to veto legislation, and both the responsibility and the means at hand with which to operate an effective, efficient county government. The starting salary for the Deputy Medical Examiner for Jackson County will be market competitive, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. The expected starting salary will be in the range of $130,000 - $170,000. In addition, Jackson County will provide an excellent fringe benefit package and reasonable relocation expenses to the successful candidate.
