This is an outstanding opportunity to become City Manager of a beautiful and progressive full-service independent City that is the “Jewel of Hampton Roads”. Hampton is a dynamic and historic community that operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City will be celebrating its 400th anniversary next year.
The successful candidate for City Manager for the City of Hampton is required to possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Political Science, Public Administration, Government, Business or a closely related field. A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred. In addition, the successful candidate should possess at least eight (8) years of executive level management and supervisory experience as City or County Manager, an Assistant or Deputy City or County Manager or equivalent experience.
The City Manager is responsible to the City Council for the proper administration of all of the affairs of the City which the City Council has authority to control. The successful candidate for the City Manager position of the City of Hampton must reside within the City of Hampton within one year of employment.
Located in the middle of the Hampton Roads Metropolitan area, centered equal distance between Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, sits Hampton, Virginia. Hampton was established in 1610 and is America’s oldest continuous English-speaking settlement. Hampton is also the site of the nation’s oldest African-American museum, NASA Langley (the Mercury Seven astronauts trained there), the largest stone fort in the nation, and the first recorded Christmas in the New World, to name a few.
With up and coming business and recreational districts like Phoebus, Coliseum Central, Buckroe Beach, and downtown, Hampton is a city on the rise. Recent developments like the Hampton Roads Convention Center, Peninsula Town Center, and Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute are keeping Hampton competitive with other localities in Hampton Roads and the nation. As of July 2008, Hampton had a population of 145,494. The city has a total land area of 51.78 square miles and a water area of 84.45 square miles.
Hampton is an independent, full-service City with sole local government taxing authority within its boundaries. As a full-service city, Hampton provides a broad range of municipal services to its citizens. These services include public safety, education, public works, refuse collection, recreation, building inspection, public health, social services, planning, community development, et al.
The City of Hampton’s annual operating budget for FY 2010 is $434.82 million. There are 1,903 FTE City employees (1,541 General Fund employees; 308 non-General Fund employees and 54 grant-funded employees making up the total workforce of 1,903 employees).
The starting salary for the new City Manager of the City of Hampton will be market competitive depending upon the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. In addition, a competitive benefits package will be provided to the successful candidate.
