The City of Goodyear, Arizona, is the fourth fastest growing suburban city in the United States with a current population of 57,000 that will grow to 550,000 over the next twenty-five years. The Fire Chief of Goodyear is seeking an experienced leader to serve as its next Deputy Fire Chief during this time of dynamic growth. The Deputy Fire Chief will manage the Operations division of the fire department. This division provides direct service to external customers in the areas of emergency response, fire prevention, and community education. The Deputy Fire Chief will be expected to coordinate efforts of team projects and manage divisional operating plans, activities and tasks. This position will report to the Fire Chief.
The Fire Chief of the City of Goodyear is seeking a strong, proven, dedicated, visionary, innovative and experienced individual to be its next Deputy Fire Chief. Specific requirements of the successful candidate include experience as a command officer at least at a battalion level, supervision in a fire department equivalent in size to Goodyear or larger, experience in a growing community, experience in a large metropolitan area with a progressive fire department that has some of the aspects of what Goodyear will look like as a community in the future. (There are currently five fire companies and 107 employees and it is expected that this number will double within the next five years.)
This position requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent acquired through four years of college and a minimum of eight years experience with five years supervisory experience in the fire service are required. Also required is a valid driver’s license, Firefighter I and II certification, and Hazardous Materials Operations Level certification.
The Deputy Fire Chief is appointed by the Fire Chief of the City of Goodyear. The Deputy Fire Chief is chosen by the Fire Chief on the basis of executive and administrative qualifications in the fire service. The new Deputy Fire Chief will work with an experienced staff which has considerable tenure with the City of Goodyear.

More than half of the city’s households are headed by a person with a college degree. With a mere 6,258 residents in 1980, Goodyear’s population exploded to 57,000 residents by 2007. By 2030, it is expected that the population of Goodyear will be 550,000.
The Goodyear Fire Department is an all-risk emergency response fire department. The Goodyear Fire Department is a member of the Central Arizona Life Safety Response System, commonly referred to as the automatic aid system.
Goodyear operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City of Goodyear staff of 566 full-time employees provides the following functions to Goodyear residents: police, fire, street construction and maintenance, bulk sanitation, water and sewer, economic development, planning and zoning, engineering, neighborhood services and all general administrative services. The FY 2007-2008 total budget for the City of Goodyear is $497.4 million, with $90.2 million of that allocated to the General Fund. The Fire Department budget for FY 2007-2008 is $14 million and there are 107 full-time employees and five fire companies. The starting salary for the new Deputy Fire Chief of Goodyear will be market competitive depending upon the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. The expected starting salary range is $80,063.18 to $97,542.62 annually plus a very good benefits package.
