CITY OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA

Greensboro, one of the most historic, diverse, and progressive city governments in the Southeastern United States, strategically located halfway between the mountains and the coast of North Carolina at a junction of Interstate 85 and Interstate 40, seeks a talented and experienced city attorney with an agile legal mind to serve as general counsel to the City Council and Mayor, and advisor to City departments and citizen boards. Appointed by and works for a 9 member City Council (including the Mayor).  Greensboro is a desirable workplace with a very stable Council-Manager form of government, an excellent executive team, and a highly educated and committed staff.  The community values its schools, commerce, cultural diversity, emphasis on social justice and transparent and involved government. Scope of the position includes contracts, labor and employment law, land use, real estate, environmental law, constitutional law, ordinances and codes, and intergovernmental agreements. Salary competitive, DOQ, plus excellent benefits package. Juris Doctor or LLB from ABA accredited law school. Must be licensed in North Carolina by 1 January 2012.  Minimum ten years’ experience in local government law, with five years as chief counsel or high level responsibility in a comparable public setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Clear communicator, patient, with strengths in facilitating the legislative process, parliamentary procedure, open meetings, and open records. Skills in intergovernmental and interpersonal relations as well as a proven record of giving sound, reasoned advice on controversial issues.
