The city is seeking an extremely well-qualified individual to become its next Public Safety Director. The selected individual will be appointed by the City Manager. He/she will manage/direct the daily operations of law enforcement, fire and emergency management in accordance with the policies established by the City Council.

The City of Gladstone is seeking a dedicated, responsive, and experienced individual for its next Public Safety Director. The successful candidate will reflect and emphasize a value driven, department-wide philosophy that includes other city departments, community agencies, neighborhood organizations, youth prevention initiatives and other criminal justice agencies. The ideal candidate should be a manager/leader who is a highly ethical individual with unquestioned integrity and one who possesses the ability to create relationships with others and cultivate and build the community’s trust.  In addition, the successful candidate should possess sufficient knowledge and competency associated with the completion of a Master's degree in a course of study related to the public safety field. Further, the selected individual should possess at least three to five years of sufficient public safety leadership experience to thoroughly understand, direct and coordinate the diverse objectives and functions of the Public Safety Department. Other attributes of the successful candidate for the Public Safety Director position is a person who will involve people in the public safety process, a collaborative department manager style, but someone who also expects to be held accountable.  The City of Gladstone is first rate on customer service and needs a Public Safety Director who will continue that philosophy. The selected candidate needs to also believe in and practice community-oriented policing.

Under the general direction of the City Manager, the new Public Safety Director will plan, direct and manage activities and operations of the City of Gladstone’s Public Safety Department. The new Public Safety Director will be responsible for directing the operations of the Public Safety Department.  

The City of Gladstone operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The Gladstone City Council consists of five members elected at-large to three-year terms in non-partisan elections.  The City Manager serves as the chief administrative officer of the City. The City of Gladstone currently has 172 FTE city employees. The current annual operating budget for the city is $14.8 million. 

The starting salary will be market competitive, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. In addition, the City will provide an excellent fringe benefit package to the successful candidate. The city also expects to reimburse the successful candidate for reasonable relocation expenses.
