The historic city is set in the beautiful prairie land of western Illinois and is seeking an experienced leader to serve as its City Manager. The city of Galesburg is seeking an experienced, dedicated, innovative and visionary leader to be its City Manager. The successful candidate must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration or a related field; a related Master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate’s work history should show progressively responsible experience in local government administration, and in a variety of governmental functions (e.g., public safety, streets and sanitation, planning, community development, personnel administration). He/she must demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development through attendance at conferences, workshops and seminars, publications, academic course work, and/or other vehicles. An ICMA Credentialed Public Manager would be a plus. The City Manager is the chief administrative officer for the city of Galesburg. Galesburg uses a council/manager plan of government and the City Manager is responsible to and appointed by the Mayor and City Council. The City Manager helps formulate and is responsible for implementing policies legislated by the City Council. The City Manager also ensures that the health, welfare, and safety of the community are being provided. The City Manager of the city of Galesburg is responsible for developing and for administering the budget throughout the year so as to ensure the city’s goals and objectives are met and dollars are expended in an effective manner. The City Council expects the City Manager to provide technical leadership in identifying new sources of revenue, as well as in arranging for public/private partnerships when such partnerships serve the city’s best interest. The city of Galesburg is located on Interstate 74 in northwest Illinois, midway between Minneapolis in the north and St. Louis in the south. The city is approximately 50 miles from the Mississippi River. The Illinois General Assembly organized the City under the provisions of an Act to Incorporate the city of Galesburg on February 14, 1857. The city of Galesburg was incorporated as a city in 1837. It is a home rule municipality and has operated under a Council/Manager form of government since 1956. The City Council consists of a Mayor elected at large, and seven Aldermen elected by districts to alternating four year terms. The city is a fiscally-sound, full-service city. The FY 2006 overall City budget is $36,226,555. There are 232 FTE city employees. The starting salary for the City Manager of the city of Galesburg will be market competitive, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. The expected starting salary will be in the range of $110,000 to $125,000, plus an automobile allowance. In addition, the city expects to provide an excellent fringe benefit package to the successful candidate. Reasonable relocation expenses will also be provided to the successful candidate.
