The City of Gaithersburg is seeking for its next Planning Director a professional manager with proven leadership, supervision abilities and technical planning skills. The ideal candidate should be adept in applying modern planning principles and practices in a medium-sized, complex organization with high development standards and, ideally, an individual who brings successful experiences from their past work in local government planning. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field supplemented by seven years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning and zoning management, and considerable supervisory experience. Experience in both the public and private sectors is a plus. Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or the ability to obtain certification within one year of appointment is required. The position of Planning Director is a highly responsible professional position overseeing the Planning Division. This position performs technical and administrative work in directing the City’s current and long-range planning programs. The position also does related work, as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Planning and Code Administration. The Planning Director supervises professional and technical staff in the Planning Division. Essential functions and technical tasks include planning, directing and supervising current and long-range planning activities, services, programs and staff. Additional functions include formulating, coordinating and implementing the comprehensive master plan, rezoning, special use permits, land development code amendments, site plan review process and development of City planning policies. Further functions include drafting ordinances, conducting research, preparing reports, writing grant applications, maintaining records and files, and advising and providing staff support to various boards, commissions, committees and elected officials. The position of Planning Director supervises and manages all activities and programs in the Planning Division, including planning, zoning, subdivision regulations and zoning ordinances; coordinates work with Department Director and other Department Directors; coordinates the development, scheduling and adoption of neighborhood plans. The starting salary for the Planning Director for the City of Gaithersburg will be market competitive, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. The expected starting salary will be in the range of $74,052 to $116,051. In addition, the City provides a generous fringe benefit package to the successful candidate, including medical/dental/life/long-term care insurance and retirement plans.
