With a population of 463,585, Douglas County is the most populous of the State’s 93 counties. Most residents live in Omaha, the County seat. Omaha is the nation’s 45th largest city. The primary governing body for Douglas County rests in a seven-member Board of County Commissioners elected for four year staggered terms. There has been considerable stability in the current Board. The County Commission appoints a Chief Administrative Officer to oversee the day to day County affairs. The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners also sits as the Douglas County Board of Corrections and ultimately oversees the Corrections Department for Douglas County. The Douglas County Corrections facility averages a daily population of 967 inmates. Admissions in 2004 totaled 16,775 with a total number of female admissions at 3,394 and male admissions at 13,380. The adopted budget for the Corrections Department for 2004/2005 fiscal year is $24M. There are currently 410 unionized employees at the facility. The Director of Corrections is appointed by and works under the direction of the Douglas County Board of Corrections. The Director performs a wide variety of administrative and managerial functions to ensure the safe, secure, efficient, consistent and professional operation of the Corrections Department for Douglas County. The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Corrections, Behavioral or Social Sciences, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field. A related Master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate should have seven years of related work experience with at least four years in an administrative or senior management capacity in a corrections setting. The position requires a valid driver’s license with own vehicle; a successful completion of a criminal records check; evidence of continued professional development in the corrections field as evidenced by completion of workshops and seminars on management and technical issues. Starting salary market competitive depending on experience and qualifications, with a competitive fringe benefit package.
