CITY OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS
Historic Decatur, Illinois, with a population over 80,000, is seeking an experienced professional to lead the City organization and help bring to fruition on-going projects and programs that will significantly improve the quality of life of its residents. With a budget of more than $100 million and 580 full time employees, Decatur’s residents are served by Departments of Economic and Urban Development, Public Works and Engineering, Water, Finance, Legal, Management Services and Police and Fire. Decatur is also the home of Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), the city’s largest employer and a significant asset to the city and region.
Located in the geographic center of Illinois, Decatur is 178 miles from Chicago, 118 miles from St. Louis and 30 miles from the State Capital in Springfield. Decatur enjoys close proximity to the University of Illinois and Illinois State University. The City has a Council-Manager form of government by referendum with seven council members elected to four year staggered terms. Projects the new City Manager will lead will include development of the water supply system, site selection and construction of a new Public Safety Building, neighborhood improvements and upgraded services and long term planning to address aging infrastructure and economic development.
The City of Decatur seeks an energetic leader with a successful track record, or a rising star, who possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field accompanied by seven to ten years of supervisory experience at the executive level. A Masters Degree is preferred but not required. The City desires a municipal executive with strong leadership qualities and a “let’s get it done” attitude – someone who is not timid about motivating staff to higher accomplishments. Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills are required. Salary is currently under review and is negotiable, DOQ plus executive benefits.
