This is an exciting opportunity to live and work in an urban Midwestern city located in America=s heartland. Dayton was the first large city in the United States to adopt the council-manager form of government by charter in 1913. The successful candidate must have a Bachelor=s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field. A Master=s degree in a closely related field is preferred. An ICMA Credentialed Manager would be a plus. The successful candidate should also possess seven years of previous management experience in a similar-sized municipal government as a city manager, deputy or assistant or similar position. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. The leadership traits the city is looking for in its City Manager include integrity; knowledge of the functioning of a citizen involved city; courage and decisiveness to make decisions and stand by them; dependability and initiative; and tact and enthusiasm. The City Manager is the chief administrative officer of the city and is responsible for executing all policies and programs made by the City Commission. This individual is also responsible for making program and policy recommendations to the City Commission to further the city=s long-range goals and objectives. According to the City Charter, the City Manager=s primary responsibility is to serve as administrative head of the municipal government and ensure that all of the city=s laws and ordinances are enforced. The City Manager is assisted by two Assistant City Managers. Dayton was once home to powered flight inventors Wilbur and Orville Wright and African American Poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. The Greater Dayton area has also been a popular location for a variety of film productions ranging from The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, independent films, various documentaries, commercial shoots and more. With a population of 166,000 citizens, Dayton is well known for its family-oriented, warm and friendly neighborhoods, its many parks, golf courses and bike paths and enviable cultural resources. Dayton is ranked 6th in the nation for affordable housing and regular commute times into the City average 19 minutes. The City of Dayton operates under a commission-manager form of government established in 1913. The city has five City Commission members who serve as the governing body for the city. The current General Fund annual operating budget for the city is $160 million. The city has 2674 FTE employees. The starting salary for the City Manager of the City of Dayton will be market competitive, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. The negotiable starting salary is $160,000 and up.  In addition, the City expects to provide an excellent fringe benefit package to the successful candidate.
