CITY OF DANVILLE, KENTUCKY

The City of Danville, Kentucky, is seeking a qualified individual to serve as city manager.

This is a contract position within the City of Danville. The City Manager is selected through public advertisement, screening and interviews conducted by the Danville Board of Commissioners and approval by resolution of the Danville Board of Commissioners. The City Manager for the City of Danville reports to the Board of Commissioners, pursuant to KRS 83A.1S0. Qualifications for the Danville City Manager position include:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in public or business administration, business planning, business management or accounting.  Five years actual responsible experience in municipal or other governmental planning and management.  Valid Driver's License. Must live or relocate within the City of Danville boundary.  Evidence of continued professional development as shown by participation in professional association activities at the state and national levels and completion of seminars and workshops in the local government management field to stay abreast of changes in the field. An ICMA Credentialed Manager would be a plus.

Provision of professional leadership, management, administration, supervision and planning for the City of Danville. The City Manager is expected to exercise a high degree of independence, initiative, and professional expertise in the overall administration of the City of Danville, including the implementation and enforcement of all City of Danville policies, ordinances, and capital improvement plans established by the Commission. The City Manager can delegate the duties and responsibilities of the office, but she/he remains ultimately responsible for the performance of the duties and responsibilities.

This is an excellent opportunity to live and work in a unique community that is the County Seat of Boyle County. Danville had a 2010 population of 16,218. It is the principal city of the Danville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Boyle and Lincoln Counties.

In 2001, Danville received a Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and in 2011, Money Magazine placed Danville as the fourth best place to retire in the United States. Danville has twice been chosen to host U. S. Vice-Presidential debates.

Danville is called the “City of Firsts”.  It housed the first courthouse in Kentucky.  It had the first U. S. Post Office west of the Allegheny Mountains. It hosts the first state-supported school for the deaf.  In it, Ephraim McDowell became the first physician in the world to successfully remove an ovarian tumor. It is home to the oldest college administration building and campus west of the Allegheny Mountains at Centre College.

There are excellent k-12 and higher educational opportunities in Danville and shopping is ample. There is excellent health care in the area and a large number of cultural, historic, annual events, and other attractions to please residents and visitors alike. Transportation to/from Danville is excellent and there are a number of good restaurants to choose from.   

The City of Danville operates under a City Manager form of local government. The governing body of the City of Danville is an elected Mayor and four Commissioners who make up a Board of Commissioners. The Mayor is elected for a 4-year term and the Commission is elected for a two-year term.  The legislative and executive powers of the City are vested in this Board of Commissioners.

The Mayor and Commissioners are elected at-large. The Board of Commissioners appoints a City Manager to be the Chief Administrative Officer of the City. Reporting to the City Manager are all department heads on the management team. The FY 2012 annual budget for the City is $24.9 million and there are 132 full-time and 28 part-time City employees.

The starting salary for the new City Manager of Danville will be market competitive, depending upon the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.  The successful candidate will also receive a competitive fringe benefit program. Reasonable relocation expenses will also be provided to the successful candidate.
