The Mayor and City Council of Covington are seeking a new City Manager to replace the current one who has announced his retirement after devoting a large part of his career to the City and after achieving a host of results leading to a great City to live and work.

The City of Covington is seeking a new City Manager. The Mayor and City Council are seeking an outstanding individual who has the experience and vision to assist the Mayor and City Council in taking the community to a new level of success.

A Bachelorís degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Public Administration or a related field from an accredited college or university is required. A Masterís degree or other graduate degree in Public Administration or a related field from an accredited college or university is preferred or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in local government, or a related field including five (5) years as a Manager or Director of a municipal or county department or related non-profit or private sector experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in managing growth, budgeting and financial management, municipal utilities and human resources development is required. Experience in Georgia and familiarity with Georgia laws would be a plus.

This position is responsible for planning and managing City programs, plans, and services. The position serves on various committees and boards and attends various meetings. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Mayor and Council and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and evaluations of results achieved.

Covington is a full-service city and small town where everyone shares a sense of community. Covington is becoming the focus for the region east of Atlanta, as a center of commerce, industry, education, recreation, arts and entertainment.

The City of Covington is a political subdivision and the County Seat of Newton County, Georgia. The legislative authority of the City is vested in the City Council, which consists of a Mayor and six (6) City Councilors.

All home rule powers of the City and the determination of all matters of policy are vested by act of the Georgia General Assembly in the City Council.

The City provides police, court, fire, 911 communications, engineering, electrical, water, sewer, streets, sanitation, cemeteries/parks environmental compliance, recreation, planning and zoning, main street and airport services. 

The FY 2012-2013 General Fund City budget is $26 million for a total budget of $123.5 million.  The City government has 326 authorized positions for FY 2012-2013. The City is in good financial condition with a reasonable tax rate.

The starting salary range for the City Manager is expected to be market competitive depending on experience and qualifications plus a competitive fringe benefit package will be provided to the successful candidate.
