This is an outstanding opportunity to provide leadership and management to an important department in one of the most vibrant and progressive county governments in the United States and one of the largest county governments in South Carolina. Charleston County has a population of 332,000. The County operates under a Council-Administrator form of local government. The total County budget for FY 2009 is $371 million.
The County Administrator and Assistant County Administrator for Human Services are seeking a proven, dedicated, visionary, innovative and experienced individual for its new Human Resources Director. The preferred individual will provide leadership in overseeing and directing a comprehensive Human Resources department of 14 exempt and non-exempt employees serving an employee population of 2,200 regular employees and 1,400 part-time/temporary employees.
The successful individual will possess as a minimum a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration with an human resources exposure or a closely related field. A Master’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration or Labor Law is preferred. An SPHR certificate is a plus. The ideal candidate should possess at least 10-15 years of directly related work experience with at least 8 years in a supervisory/management capacity with an employee population of over 500.
The successful candidate for Human Resources Director of Charleston County should be able to exercise diplomacy, be flexible yet maintain the structure within the County government and be diplomatic in their response to the external structure of Charleston County government. The new Human Resources Director should also be committed to diversity, be approachable and accessible, and have an appreciation for the processes often involved in reaching consensus on County issues.
The new Human Resources Director will possess a strong history of credibility and accomplishments in the human resources field and will be someone who can establish a strong presence and credibility for the department.

Charleston County’s population has grown 7.1 percent since 2000 to an estimated 2006 population of 331,917, with a median age of 36.
The salary range for the Human Resources Director position is $78,249.60 to $118,372.80 depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. In addition, the County provides an excellent fringe benefit package.
