ASSISTANT CITY ADMINISTRATOR

Excellent opportunity to live and work in the Big Sky County. The City of Billings, Montana, with a population of 95,000, is seeking an Assistant City Administrator. Billings is located in south central Montana and is the largest community in the state. Billings prides itself on great schools, affordable housing and outstanding cultural and recreational opportunities. Billings is one hour from the beautiful Beartooth Mountains and Red Lodge Ski area, as well as near the Pryor and Bighorn Mountains and the historic Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. The major tourist attraction is Yellowstone National Park, a two-hour drive southwest of Billings. The Assistant City Administrator is responsible for external City service operations in a combination reporting relationship with the City Administrator. The position is responsible for working with Department Heads of Police, Fire, Public Works, Library, Parks and Airport. The position acts as City Administrator when the City Administrator is on vacation or not available. The position has regular interaction with City Council and spends approximately 25 percent of time on special projects. It requires a person experienced and skilled in the processes of local government management. The successful candidate must be team oriented, have the ability to take input on direction and give appropriate feedback, have strength of character, and be an excellent communicator. The successful candidate is expected to attend and take part in public meetings, represent the City in public forums and have a key role in dealing with organized labor. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration or a related field and a Master’s degree in Public Administration or related field is preferred. Also required is evidence of continued professional development and participation in professional development activities at the state and national level. The successful candidate must have a minimum of three to five years of city management experience. It requires strong organizational development skills, experience in developing policies and procedures and good interpersonal skills. The position reports to the City Administrator. Starting salary range of $75,000 to $85,000 depending on experience and qualifications. Automobile allowance and competitive fringe benefit program provided.
