The General Manager is looking for a seasoned and highly professional individual who will be a key member of the top management team and who can create the effective role needed for this new position. The successful individual will be one who can also become a well-known communicator for ASA and a leader in the community.

The ASA General Manager is seeking a person who is flexible, understands politics and grasps the technical aspects of ASA, but can put them in layman’s terms for better understanding by stakeholders. A minimum of seven years of experience in public relations, communication, and/or media relations or equivalent combinations of education and experience are required. The minimum requirement is for a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a Master’s degree a plus. A person with a scientific background and knowledge of environmental issues in the water industry is preferred.  

In addition, it will be a plus if the successful candidate has experience in graphics productions and publications, desktop graphics publishing, and/or multimedia productions. Completion of college-level courses in journalism, communications, multimedia production, public administration, government or a related field would also be a plus.

The successful candidate for Public Communications Liaison is not required to live within the City limits of the City of Alexandria, but to live within reasonable commuting distance from ASA’s facility.

The Public Communications Liaison is responsible for the development and implementation of ASA’s proactive strategic communication program, which includes employee, community and media relations.  In the absence of the General Manager, the Public Communications Liaison may serve as the spokesperson for ASA.

The City of Alexandria, Virginia, Sanitation Authority (ASA) was created in 1952 by the Alexandria City Council “for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, improving, extending, operating, and maintaining a sewer system and sewage disposal system” to serve Alexandria and portions of Fairfax County.

ASA is governed by a Board of five citizen members appointed by the City Council of the City of Alexandria to a four-year staggered term. There is also a representative on the Board from Fairfax County. Board members are term-limited to a total of 10 years of service on the Board. The Board is a public body in all respects, but is independent of the City government administratively and financially.

The Alexandria Sanitation Authority currently has an annual operating budget of $25 million and 116 employees. ASA services 26,000 accounts and one large wholesale customer, Fairfax County, Virginia.
