TOWN OF TAOS, NEW MEXICO

Tucked away in the Sangre de Christo Mountains of Northern New Mexico is a gem of a town named Taos. Taos has a Council/Manager form of government with an appointed Town Manager, who is the Chief Administrative Officer and manages the day to day operations of the Town. The FY03 budget for the Town is $30.8M. The Town of Taos Police Department serves the community through selective law enforcement and crime prevention programs to protect life and property.

 

CHIEF OF POLICE

Taos is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional to serve the citizens of the Town as Chief of Police. The ideal candidate should be an experienced police manager, who is an innovative law enforcement professional with strong leadership, interpersonal and management skills. This position works under the supervision of the Town Manager and is part of the Town’s Management Team. Requires the ability to develop and administer policies, effective training programs, coordinate department functions and to develop an effective organizational structure. Requires ability to prepare the Departmental annual budget request, to prepare and present periodic reports to the Town Council and to establish and maintain effective intergovernmental relations with other agencies. Requires Bachelor's degree in police science, criminology, or a related field with at least 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience. Three years of this experience must have been spent in a supervisory capacity. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. The expected starting range for this position is $50,000 per annum, depending upon experience and qualifications, plus an excellent fringe benefit package.

 

POLICE SERGEANT

Taos is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional to serve the citizens of the Town as Police Sergeant. The ideal candidate should be an experienced police officer who is an innovative law enforcement professional with strong leadership, interpersonal, and supervision skills. Requires two years of specialized training that has been provided through formal academic courses and formal supervisory training. Requires five years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience as a municipal, county or state officer. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. The currently hourly rate for this position is $15.64 to $18.67, plus an excellent fringe benefit package.

 

POLICE OFFICER

Taos is seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer. The successful candidate for this position must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. In addition, the successful candidate must have the ability to pass a series of tests (competency, psychological, and background investigation). The successful candidate should have high moral standards, demonstrate professional competence, and be able to communicate effectively with the public. The current hourly rate for this position is #12.00 per hour for non-certified personnel. Applicants who are currently certified by the Police Academy are expected to be hired at a higher pay rate based upon their number of years of experience in law enforcement. In addition, an excellent fringe benefit package, including a 20-year retirement program through PERA, will be provided.
