With a population of 463,585, Douglas County is the most populous of the State’s 93 counties. Most residents live in Omaha, the County seat. Omaha is the nation’s 45th largest city. Douglas County and the Omaha Metropolitan area rank as one of the top locations in size for education. The area gets high marks for its class size and student SAT and ACT scores. There are 12 colleges and universities in the area around Douglas County offering a wide variety of choices for people wanting degrees or additional skills. The City of Omaha is active and diverse with arts, entertainment, theater, museums, parks and open spaces. The primary governing body for Douglas County rests in a seven-member Board of County Commissioners elected for four year staggered terms. There has been considerable stability in the current Board. The County Commission appoints a Chief Administrative Officer to oversee the day to day County affairs. The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners also sits as the Douglas County Corrections Board and ultimately oversees the Corrections Department for Douglas County. The Douglas County Corrections facility averages a daily population of 830 inmates. Admissions in 2002 totaled 17,536 with a total number of female admissions at 3,509 and male admissions at 14,207. The adopted budget for the Corrections Department for 2002/2003 fiscal year is $18M. There are currently 258 unionized employees at the facility. The facility is undergoing a major $42M renovation and expansion program paid primarily with bond revenue. The Director of Corrections is appointed by and works under the direction of the Douglas County Corrections Board. The Director performs a wide variety of administrative and managerial functions to ensure the safe, secure, efficient, consistent and professional operation of the Corrections Department for Douglas County. The successful candidate needs a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Corrections, Behavioral or Social Sciences, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field. A related Master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate needs five years of related work experience with at least four years in an administrative or senior management capacity in a corrections setting. The position requires an experienced leader with highly developed interpersonal skills. The successful candidate needs to be an active listener and a person of high integrity and ethics. The expected salary range will be $90,000 to $100,000, depending on experience and qualifications, with a competitive fringe benefit package.
