Chief of Police

The City of Bryan (65,000 population) seeks a police chief who is committed to delivering public services in a responsive and cost-effective manner, providing leadership for a Department with 112 sworn personnel and a 2003 budget of $10 million. Candidates must have a proven record of success in building and maintaining positive relationships with diverse community groups, as well as a willingness to be visible and accessible to all citizens. The successful candidate must possess exceptional leadership and management qualities with an expectation of excellence, professionalism and high integrity from all police employees.  This person must have the ability to anticipate, identify and effectively resolve any problems and/or issues that may occur, while having unquestioned personal integrity, well-developed professional ethics, strong written and verbal communication skills, and a mindset toward the innovative and progressive. The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in management, criminal justice, business, public administration or a closely related field.  A master’s degree and completion of executive development courses are preferred. Fifteen years of related experience is required, including a minimum of five years experience at the level of chief or assistant chief in a municipality of similar size to Bryan or larger.  The candidate must be eligible for certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education at the intermediate level, or its equivalent as determined by that commission, and also must have served as a bona fide law enforcement officer for at least five years.
